Surgical Procedures - Implant Removal

Implant Removal

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure performed to remove breast implants due to personal preference, implant complications, rupture, capsular contracture or discomfort.

How is this procedure performed?

During this procedure, breast implants are carefully removed and in some cases the surrounding scar tissue capsule may also be partially or completely removed (capsulectomy). Depending on the patient’s goals and breast shape, implant removal may be combined with replacement of new implants, a breast lift to improve contour and skin tightening – or both.

Downtime

Most patients can return to light daily activities within 1–2 weeks following implant removal surgery. Swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort are common during the early recovery period and gradually improve over several weeks. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and upper body workouts should generally be avoided for approximately 4–6 weeks to allow proper healing. Recovery time may vary depending on whether additional procedures, such as a capsulectomy or breast lift, are performed at the same time.

Scars

Existing implant scars are often reused with minimal additional scarring.
